New Park Farm, Somerset

New Park Farm was built on a green field site and rests amongst acres of untouched Somerset countryside. South facing and on heavy clay, it enjoys long views over the Blackmore Vale.

Harmonising the house and garden with the natural beauty that surrounds it was at the heart of the design process. This began with the planting of trees and hedging, planning vistas in both the garden and the surrounding fields.

Fifteenth century monks farmed mussels here and one of the first tasks was to restore the largest of the lakes. A wild flower meadow with mown grass paths links the more formal gardens to the water.

A reflecting pond was built on the south side of the garden, with Pyrus Chanticleer in Buxus slippers on either side. Long herbaceous borders in front of yew and hornbeam hedges frame the view.

The terrace which runs along the length of the house is a garden in itself. Soft, billowing planting disguises the hard lines of the stone used. A wonderful place to sit and drink in the surrounding views.
